Toni Randle came to the Christchurch Jazz School in 1996 as one of an elite
group of musicians from the same school, Burnside High. Referred to as the 'A' Team by tutors, Toni always maintained vocal parity with the
instrumental attributes of the other members of her ensembles throughout her studies.

Toni brought an air of adventure, dedication and professionalism to her
craft from day one. Her attention to the demands of this new (to her, coming
from a classical vocal background) vocal genre was the beginning of three
years of hard graft and personal growth. Her classical work was never far
away in her practice and her teaching yet the jazz fire had been lit and at
every opportunity, Toni absorbed the vocal legacy of the spectrum of jazz
divas she could access, be it on disc or video.

Toni's successful completion of her Jazz Diploma, in addition to regular gig
work of a very high standard, was only the beginning as she soon found
herself in Sydney completing her Bachelor's degree and now her Masters. The Christchurch Jazz School bathes in reflected glory from one of our truly
dedicated talents and we are not surprised at her growth and progress. We will continue to follow with keen interest and pride the career of one of
whom Don Rader said, "You only need a few 'monsters' to make the whole of an institution's existence worth while". Toni's monstrous talent, heart and
soul are where education, individualisation and professionalism come together so perfectly in this imperfect world.

Neil Pickard, former Head of the Christchurch Polytechnic Jazz School.
